Girls on the Run is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.

OUR PROGRAMS

Girls on the Run was brought to Southeast Washington by our council founder, Misty Fewel. Moving from Michigan when her daughter was young, Misty had heard all about Girls on the Run and was excited for her eager third grader to participate in their new town. However, after arriving here, she realized that Girls on the Run did not exist in this area. After lots of soul searching, Misty realized that it was up to her to bring Girls on the Run to Tri-Cities. She began in partnership with the YMCA with one team of 15 girls in 2009. From then, it has consistently grown - from one team in 2009 to 24 teams and 299 girls this past fall! In 2013 Girls on the Run Southeast WA became an independent councils of Girls on the Run International and its own 501(c)(3) organization. Since 2013 we have added more areas in Southeast Washington state, including Burbank and Walla Walla. Our plans for the future include reaching as many schools in our current territory as we can and then moving west toward Yakima - and beyond!

Girls on the Run International was established in 1996 in Charlotte, North Carolina by Molly Barker. What started with thirteen girls in one school has grown to over 200 councils in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. With the help of almost 100,000 volunteers, Girls on the Run served nearly 180,000 girls in 2015, including our millionth girl! Girls on the Run continues to grow and currently hosts more than 350 end-of-season 5K events across the United States, making the Girls on the Run 5K series the largest in the country. Girls on the Run has also expanded to include middle school girls through Heart & Sole, a program dedicated to the unique needs of adolescent girls.

OUR STAFF

Sarah McMenamin

Executive Director

“I grew up believing that I could never be an athlete. I love knowing that other girls don’t have to grow up with that belief!”

Ashley Bates

Program Coordinator

“I love Girls on the Run because they give girls a chance to lead happy, healthy lives. It gives the girls that participate (and the coaches) the chance to claim herself as her own, break out of the restraints of society, and become all that she sets out to be.”

We're always considering passionate individuals to join our team and help us inspire more girls in the Southeast Washington area.
