Girls on the Run was brought to Southeast Washington by our council founder, Misty Fewel. Moving from Michigan when her daughter was young, Misty had heard all about Girls on the Run and was excited for her eager third grader to participate in their new town. However, after arriving here, she realized that Girls on the Run did not exist in this area. After lots of soul searching, Misty realized that it was up to her to bring Girls on the Run to Tri-Cities. She began in partnership with the YMCA with one team of 15 girls in 2009. From then, it has consistently grown - from one team in 2009 to 24 teams and 299 girls this past fall! In 2013 Girls on the Run Southeast WA became an independent councils of Girls on the Run International and its own 501(c)(3) organization. Since 2013 we have added more areas in Southeast Washington state, including Burbank and Walla Walla. Our plans for the future include reaching as many schools in our current territory as we can and then moving west toward Yakima - and beyond!
